Video use

More and more AMIDSt researchers are experimenting with the use of video as a method for data gathering and as a way to illustrate one's research. Most of us have followed a one week course in visual anthropology (see http://www.vistavisuals.nl).  With video we can reach a much broader audience. Working with video has taught us to be better observers. We now see things that we never saw even though they were right under our eyes. Initially, most of us were a bit insecure about people's reactions to the camera. That turned out not to be necessary. By the time we pull out our cameras, the people already know us quite well (for years in some cases). With the usual introductions most people were happy and proud to be in the film. We have felt the greatest joy when we watched back the material on a TV screen with the people who are in the film themselves.
