Ghana Expertise

Natural Resource Management

The natural resources of Ghana are abundant; there are a couple of forest and nature reserves aiming to protect rainforest or to protect wildlife, such as Kakum National Park (in the south) or Mole Game Reserve (in the north). The Ghanaian coastal waters are quite rich with marine resources due to seasonal upwelling. Keta lagoon is one of the largest lagoons in West Africa and is, together with 5 other lagoons, one of the RAMSAR sites. Ghana is also known for its gold resources and timber. The exploitation of both does bring up questions of sustainability – natural and social. Who profits and for how long? The management of natural resources is an interesting theme touching on questions of access, rights, territory and governance.
