Funerals

One cannot travel in Ghana on a Saturday without seeing at least one funeral taking place. Funerals are important events where many people show up. All ethnicities in Ghana have their own rituals, colours and funeral dances, but all funerals have the rhythm of wakekeeping (Friday), burial (Saturday) and thanksgiving (Sunday). The body of the deceased is often beautifully laid in state, whereby artefacts show what the deceased did in life. Also the coffins can be beautifully carved into wooden cars, or fish or planes – depending on the person buried. On Sunday the ‘books’ are also closed; funerals in Ghana are very costly so all mourners are expected to make a contribution – whereby the family hopes for a profit.
