Ghana Expertise

Fishing

Within marine fishing the artisanal sector is dominant; about 10.000 canoes are responsible for 70 per cent of the marine catches. Artisanal fishing is mainly done by the Fante (mostly purse seining), the Ga (hook and line) and the Ewe’s (beach seining). The rest is caught by the (semi-)industrial fleet. Ghanaian fish exports made up 83 million dollars in 2000 (Mensah at al 2001) and are among the top three most important non-traditional exports (of which tuna is most important). It contributes 3 per cent of GDP, but more importantly fish is recognized as the most important source of animal protein in Ghana (Ghana NCU 2001) and 10 percent of the population of Ghana (almost 2 million people) works in fisheries and depends on fishing for their livelihood.
