Ghana Expertise Upper East Region
Upper East is located in the north-eastern corner of the country; it is bordered to the north by Burkina Faso and to the east by the Republic of Togo. The major ethnic groups in Upper East fall under the broad categories of Mole Dagbon (74.5 per cent), Grusi (8.5 per cent), Mande-Busanga (6.2 per cent) and Gurma (3.2 per cent).The region’s population is not evenly distributed among the six districts. Three districts,(Bolgatanga, Kassena-Nankana and Bawku East) contain about 75 per cent of the total population. The region is the least urbanized in the country. The region records the highest proportion of adherents to Traditional religion in the country (46.4 per cent).The region’s soil is low in soil fertility, erosion is a problem. The natural vegetation is that of the savannah woodland. Agriculture, hunting and forestry are the main economic activities in the region. About eighty per cent of the economically active population engages in agriculture. The main produce are millet, guinea-corn, maize, groundnut, beans, sorghum and dry season tomatoes and onions. Livestock and poultry production are also important. The Paga Crocodile Pond is one of the main tourist attractions. |
